"Article - Meloni has stated she is not opposed to recognising a Palestinian state"
🔍 What Meloni’s Position Is
Meloni has stated she is not opposed to recognising a Palestinian state. BUT she has placed conditions:
All Israeli hostages held by Hamas must be released & Hamas must be excluded from any future Palestinian government.
She has avoided immediate recognition without those preconditions. This stance differs from other European countries (UK, France, Canada, etc.) which have moved toward recognition more directly.
The government intends to present a motion in the parliament to push recognition under those conditions.
🚨 What Triggered the Protests & What Happened
On 22 September 2025, widespread protests and a 24-hour general strike were held across many Italian cities in solidarity with Gaza. The strike and protests were organised by trade unions and civil society groups.
Demonstrators demanded things like:
Italy officially recognising Palestinian statehood.
An end to Italy’s involvement in arms / logistics transfers to Israel.
Stronger humanitarian action.
Major cities involved: Milan, Rome, Bologna, Genoa, Naples among others. Protests included blockades at ports, disruptions to public transport, strikes in schools & universities.
🌐 Public Opinion & Political Pressure
There’s been a noticeable shift in public opinion, with polls showing significant portions of Italians favor recognition of Palestine (though not universally) and concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Opposition parties have strongly criticised Meloni’s government, saying the delayed recognition or conditional demands are inadequate given the scale of devastation in Gaza.
Meloni condemned the violence in protests, calling them “shameful” and saying the destruction will not help the Palestinian cause.
🔭 Implications & What to Watch
Diplomatic position: Meloni’s conditional shift (motion in Parliament) may be a way to respond to public pressure while not alienating allies (Israel, etc.). How the motion passes (or doesn’t) will matter.
Union strength / social unrest: The widespread participation suggests strong grassroots support for Palestine, which could shape domestic politics and Meloni’s right-wing coalition.
Foreign relations: Italy’s position is diverging somewhat from other EU countries; this could affect Italy’s standing or diplomatic relations with EU partners and with Middle Eastern countries.
Recognition of Palestine: Whether Italy joins UK, Canada, France etc. in recognizing Palestine more formally (with fewer conditions) will be a key flip-point.
Potential for more protests / strikes: If conditions aren’t met, there’s likely to be continued unrest — possibly more disruptive, especially in port cities.
